Can faculty request ebooks and streaming films to use in their classes?

Answer

The CSM Library already has access to millions of electronic books, articles, and films that do not require any special request.

If you would like to speak with a librarian about materials that are currently available in the library for use in your class you can chat with a librarian during the library's open hours. This is the fastest way to locate an electronic resource in our collection.

Twice a year the CSM Library sends out a call to all faculty interested in acquiring electronic resources for their classes. Check your email from the Senate president in November (Spring courses) and April (Summer and Fall courses) for the call for requests or use this form.

Between semesters you can use the supplemental request form: https://smccd-czqfp.formstack.com/forms/csm_library_electronic_reserves_request_form_supplemental

Please note:

  • Limit requests to required resources as listed in your syllabus. Do not submit recommended or optional readings.
  • The form cannot be used to request textbooks (Cengage, MacGraw-Hill, Pearson, etc.); it can be used to request non-textbook materials including other books and streaming films.
  • In most cases single copies of ebooks will be purchased and available to students for limited individual use. Publishers currently control the pricing and usage limitations of these electronic titles (streaming films allow multi-users and are an exception).
  • For streaming films:
    • The Library is limited to acquiring streaming films from its current streaming services; films unavailable on these platforms cannot be acquired. Services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. are not available for Library streaming.
    • Streaming films ordered by the CSM Library are not owned in perpetuity and must be requested every year.
    • Availability of streaming films changes depending on studio decisions and some titles may not be available every year.
  • The Library will do its best to fulfill the needs of our faculty and students but there may be limitations to fulfilling all requests. These limitations may include, but are not limited to: cost, online availability, ADA compatibility, and access. Please see the CSM Library Collection Development Policy for how decisions are made.
  • The CSM Library will purchase or acquire as many materials as possible, but some requests may require additional funds from your department/division. The Library will compile all requests and contact the necessary departments/divisions if this is necessary.

If you are interested in using CSM Library materials for a ZTC course please contact the Digital Services Librarian to learn more about availability and permanence of CSM Library's online resources.
